Founded in 1675 by Quaker John Fenwick, the early settlement that became Salem began as a small colonial community and was later incorporated as part of New Jersey’s first 104 townships in 1798. It officially became Salem City in 1858.
Today, Salem City, NJ stands as a vibrant community of approximately 5,386 residents (2025) and is proudly celebrating 350 years of history, resilience, and renewal. While its roots reach back to the 17th century, Salem’s focus is firmly on the future – honoring its heritage while continuing to grow, evolve, and build a stronger city for the generations ahead.
