Code Enforcement Officer/ Housing Inspector

The City of Salem seeks a qualified individual to serve as a full time Housing Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer. This person will work under the direction of the Zoning Enforcement Officer and the Commerce Director. Primary duty is to perform inspection work involved in eliminating blight and restoring and/or eliminating subnormal housing accommodations. Duties would also include but not be limited to the following: ensuring that structures and businesses are in compliance with local, county and state codes and ordinances; conducting field inspections and initiating enforcement actions against violators; consulting with owners on compliance issues; providing detailed reports on daily operations and appearing in court as necessary.

Experience in this or a related field is preferred. Some evening and weekend hours. Applicants must have a Hotel and Multiple Dwelling Law Certificate or be willing to take the necessary classes in order to receive certification within 18 months. A valid NJ driver’s license is required.
