The city of Salem has a total population of around 5,200 people. 57% of the population identifies as African-American. Females outnumber males by about 9%. 95% of the population speaks English as a first language. The work force is of prime age, with a median of around 33 years, which is younger than the median in the State.  Nearly two-thirds of the work force has attained a bachelor's degee education or better. There are over 2600 housing units in the city, of which 65% are single family homes.  It is a stable work force, with over 77% of all households being in their current home for more than one year.
